I am Saachi Chhaparwal, a poet and a global citizen who loves spreading joy. Born in India and raised in six different countries, I have developed a deep appreciation for diverse cultures and perspectives. Currently, I am studying at Dulwich College Shanghai Pudong (DCSPD) in Shanghai, China.

SUPPORTING DESERVING YOUNG TALENT
How it Started
During a summer holiday trip back to my father’s hometown of Washim in India in 2022, my curiosity led me to explore his school. To my surprise, the school appeared vastly different from any of the six schools I had attended in various countries. My father’s remarks about considering himself privileged to have attended that school sparked a profound curiosity within me. Subsequently, my father took me to a village school located a few kilometers away from Washim. This primary government school catered to students from Grade 1 to Grade 4.
Seeing the school and meeting the children there made me reflect deeply. On the one hand, I was filled with gratitude for the access I had to the best facilities to learn but on the other hand, I was disturbed and felt sorry about the children who will not be able to unleash their potential simply because they don’t have the proper infrastructure and platform.
Most of the children in rural India often drop out of school and end up in ultra-low-paying daily jobs despite being very capable. I believe I have gotten more than a fair share of access to resources and hence, it is my duty to help.
Translating Thinking into Action
I engaged in detailed discussions with the head teacher of the school to understand how I could make a meaningful contribution. She highlighted several key areas where support was needed:
i) providing basic resources such as notepads, pens, and pencils,
ii) instilling a hunger for learning and education in the children,
iii) fostering self-belief and motivation,
iv) sharing my own experiences to inspire them,
v) teaching them life skills beyond their curriculum and
vi) lastly, just spend time with the children when I am in India as they would look up me as an inspiration.
Motivated by this, I decided to pursue two initiatives:
- Spending time with the children and organizing activities that would enhance their overall learning experience.
- Offering active support to the students in Grade 4 including financial support for studies, teaching Mathematics and English online (as needed) and mentoring and coaching including 1:1s/ groups through regular (bi-weekly) calls.
I made a compilation of poems I wrote and sold it among family friends in India and utilized the proceeds to purchase necessities for these students.

My Appeal
Through my efforts thus far, I have witnessed firsthand the positive impact we can make on the lives of children in rural India. The students at the school affectionately refer to me as “Saachi Didi” (elder sister). This experience has brought me immense satisfaction, joy, and gratitude. I am eager to invite others to join me in this endeavor, to experience the same sense of fulfillment, and to contribute towards creating a better future for the less privileged by contributing towards their holistic development.
